Tom Brady Rookie Card Tops $2.25 Million

Tom Brady capped off the 2020 NFL season with a seventh Super Bowl ring, fifth MVP, and tenth Super Bowl appearance, and now he’s set a new record. On Friday, April 2, 2021, Lelands sold a limited edition Tom Brady rookie card for $2,252,854.

The 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Rookie Ticket #144 Tom Brady rookie autograph 99/100 BGS NM-MT+ 8.5 opened at $75,000 before 67 bids pushed it to the $2.25 million total.

Differing from the regular Brady rookie cards, it was signed by the quarterback as part of a limited set of only 100 cards (this one was No. 99). The card’s already high NM-MT+ 8.5 grade was accompanied by an even higher autograph grade of 9. It had been purchased on eBay over 10 years ago and spent that time in the same private collection.

Prior to this sale, Brady had already held the record for highest price of a football card. In March 2021 the same type of rookie card set the record when it sold for $1.32 million through PWCC Marketplace.

This sale continues the rapid upward momentum in sales for sports cards. Before that, a Patrick Mahomes card set the record at $861,000 in February 2021.

The current record for most expensive sports card is held by the 1952 Mickey Mantle card that sold for $5.2 million.
