J.G. Jones Unleashes The Black Terror on Overstreet

J.G. Jones, who has created many of the most iconic comic book covers of this generation, has turned his talents to the iconic Golden Age character The Black Terror for the cover of the Hall of Fame edition of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #52. Due in comic shops on July 20, 2022, this edition will be featured in the April PREVIEWS from Diamond Comic Distributors. It can be already seen on the inside back cover of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide To Lost Universes #1, now on sale.

This edition of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #52 will be available in both hardcover ($44.95) and soft cover ($34.95) formats. Both Black Terror versions of this approximately 1,120-page book will be exclusive to comic shops.

After debuting on Dark Dominion at DEFIANT and Fatale at Broadway Comics, J.G. Jones quickly went on to make himself one of the most popular artists in the industry with his work on Shi: The Series, Painkiller Jane/Darkchylde, Black Widow (which introduced the character Yelena Belova), Marvel Boy, Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia, Wanted, Final Crisis, Before Watchmen: Comedian, and Strange Fruit, among many other projects. He staked out an additional claim to fame as a cover artist for such series as Y: The Last Man, Wonder Woman, Doc Savage, and perhaps most notably when he provided all 52 covers for the series 52.

“Black Terror debuted in Exciting Comics in 1941. And excitement is exactly what the book delivered, with our black-clad hero taking on the evil Axis powers and battling alongside our Allied troops. I wanted to depict a little of that high octane action for the Guide, and show that the excitement is still extant,” J.G. Jones said.

Jones previously illustrated a highly praised Batman cover for The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #44. He is part of a roster of incredible talent more than five decades deep including such contributors as Joe Kubert, Will Eisner, Carl Barks, Wally Wood, Alex Schomburg, C.C. Beck, Murphy Anderson, Joe Simon, George Pérez, Mark Chiarello, Darwyn Cooke, Amanda Conner, Walter Simonson, Adam Hughes, J. Scott Campbell, Ryan Sook, Todd McFarlane, and Butch Guice, among others.

“Working with J.G. Jones is always a joy. He blew us away with his Batman cover on CBPG #44 and he’s done it again with this Black Terror cover for CBPG #52. It captures the energy and the mayhem one associates with the character, and it does so with Jones’ usual incredible sense of style,” said J.C. Vaughn, Vice-President of Publishing for Gemstone Publishing.

The Bible of serious comic book collectors, dealers, and historians since it was first published in 1970, The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide is released each July by Gemstone Publishing. Compiled by founder Robert M. Overstreet with contributions from an extensive roster of Overstreet Advisors, the Guide offers insight into the complex and exciting comic book market. In addition to new prices, this edition includes new feature articles, new additions to the Overstreet Hall of Fame, and dozens of new market reports.

When it arrives, CBPG #52 will join a strong line-up of books due out this year from Gemstone Publishing. The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide To Lost Universes #1, a brand new price guide/Photo-Journal hybrid, is set to debut on Wednesday, February 16. The Guide will also be preceded by The Overstreet Guide To Collecting Comics – Free Comic Book Day 2022 Edition, a special 48-page comic about collecting comics, which will arrive on Saturday, May 7, Free Comic Book Day. Following the Guide, due out October 26, will be the full book-length second edition of The Overstreet Guide To Collecting Comics, a prose/comics hybrid showcasing many different aspects of collecting.

“This is the second of our 2022 covers that we’ve announced thus far, and it’s already clear that this is going to be a very exciting, defining year for the Guide,” Vaughn said. “There are more announcements to come as well in the weeks ahead.”
